Skerries November 2008
Various aspects of this particular project presented several construction challenges and indeed some design opportunities for an extensive Patio. From a design perspective, it was important to avoid a ‘wall to wall’ Patio that simply separated the House from the garden area. Despite the large green space, it was agreed to retain an open view to the garden and although some sub-division was welcomed, any significant compartmentalisation was to be avoided. The clients enjoy the Outdoor life and indeed make regular use of the Patio areas with the family during the day time and later in evenings with friends. The young family also enjoyed playing a range of sports in the adjoining tennis court. The design involved screening of the sports area and for added impact the construction of a large Raised Bed which stretched the eye around the corner providing an effective green backdrop for the large integrated Water Feature. Some trapped planting spaces were incorporated into the Patio along House perimeter, the evening Patio area was raised to provide a subtle but effective differentiation to the more expansive day time patio area. Simple sweeping curves and concentric arcs were used to define the planting spaces within the ‘evening patio spaces’ and to provide added visual attraction during the evening hours and hours of darkness, a range of energy efficient light fittings were discreetly positioned to provide some added welcome glow. Mature specimen planting featured extensively in this project, including Prunus Lusitanica, Chamerops Humilis, Laurus Nobilis. The featured natural paving is Indian Sandstone Ravina for Patio areas, Leitrim Sandstone was used for outer walling part of the Raised Beds and Sandstone Kerbing as Edging and Risers.
Great skill and workmanship was much in evidence throughout this project and the outstanding results is proud testament to our landscaping skills.
